Community Tournament Guidelines
To support the continued growth of Rocket League Esports, we created a set of Rocket League Community Tournament Guidelines for all aspiring Rocket League tournament organizers. We wish to encourage the competitive community to continue hosting amazing tournaments and creating more of our favorite moments that will remain a pillar of the Rocket League Esports community.
If your tournament complies with the following guidelines, you are permitted to run your tournament under our Rocket League Community License (“Community License”) and you do not need to apply for further approvals except as otherwise stated in the Community License.
At a Glance:
- Prize pool & appearance fees are under $15,000
- Maximum value of compensation (streaming platform revenue, sponsorship revenue, and all other forms of revenue, either in cash, products, or in-kind) is under $50,000
- All players must be at least 15 years old (or such other age, if greater, as may be required in such player’s country of residence)
- The Tournament is online only (i.e., no physical venue or location for play of the Game)
- The Tournament does not last for more than three (3) consecutive days and you do not host more than one (1) Tournament per week
Broadcast:
- You can record and stream your tournament via an online streaming platform (e.g., Twitch, YouTube, etc.), but you cannot broadcast your tournament on linear television.
- You cannot restrict the viewing of your tournament behind a paid purchase requirement of any kind.
Revenue & Sponsors:
- The total contributions that you can receive from sponsors in connection with your tournament(s) is $50,000. This amount includes, among other things, contributions provided in the form of prize money, purses, salaries, non-cash prizes (such as gaming hardware or equipment), streaming platform revenue, sponsorship revenue, crowdfunding, and all other items of value (cash and non-cash).
- Your tournament cannot include any marketing, promotion, endorsement, or sponsorship of any of the entities, products, or services on the following list: (i) drugs or drug paraphernalia; (ii) tobacco or tobacco related products, including vaping products; (iii) alcohol; (iv) energy drinks; (v) firearms; (vi) pornography or any other adult-only materials; (vii) automotive companies; (viii) cryptocurrencies, non-fungible tokens (NFTs), or any other blockchain-related product or service; (ix) any business (A) whose content is discriminatory, harassing, or otherwise hateful in nature, or (B) whose practices are detrimental to the image of, or results in public criticism of or reflects badly on, Psyonix; (x) any business that encourages illegal activities or violates applicable law; (xi) gambling products (including fantasy sports betting), lotteries or illegal wagering; (xii) any business that promotes (A) the use of in-game hacks, cheating, exploits, or in-game currency farming or selling, or (B) the sale, rental, licensing, distribution, or transfer of a game account; (xiii) political candidates; and (xiv) high toll phone services.
- You cannot conduct or promote betting, wagering, or gambling on any match at your tournament, or benefit, either directly or indirectly, from betting, wagering, or gambling on any match at your tournament.
- You cannot create, market, or sell merchandise of any kind (including intangible or digital merchandise) in connection with your tournament that features any Psyonix asset.
Prizing:
- The total compensation awarded to players and/or teams at your tournament (including, for example, prize money, non-cash prizes (such as gaming hardware or equipment), travel and lodging expenses, appearance fees, etc.) is not greater than $15,000.
- All tournament prizing must be set in advance, must be clearly stated in your tournament rules, and cannot be a function of, or otherwise be dependent on, the number of participants for your tournament.
Tournament Fees:
- Your tournament must be free to enter. Charging an entry fee for the venue is allowed, but competing players must be allowed to participate in the competition for free.
Trademarks & Affiliation:
- You can use the Rocket League name and logo to generally market and promote your tournament.
- You cannot use the Rocket League name and logo (or any other Psyonix asset) in a way that could cause people to believe that your tournament is an official Psyonix production or that it has been endorsed or approved by Psyonix.
- For example, you cannot host a tournament that is named “The Rocket League Swamp Tournament”, but you can name your tournament “The Swamp Tournament” with a subtitle “featuring Rocket League”.
- You cannot use the terms “Championship”, “Split”, “Regional Event”, “Major” or “Season” in your tournament title, or in any marketing and promotion materials for your tournament.
- Your tournament title must align with Rocket League’s ESRB “Everyone” and PEGI 3 ratings. This means that, without limitation, you cannot use a tournament title that is intolerant, discriminatory, overly violent, or explicit.
- Example: The Killer Cup
- Your tournament rules and all tournament marketing materials must contain or display the following disclaimer: “THIS TOURNAMENT IS IN NO WAY SPONSORED, ENDORSED, OR ADMINISTERED BY, OR OTHERWISE ASSOCIATED WITH, PSYONIX LLC. THE INFORMATION PLAYERS PROVIDE IN CONNECTION WITH THIS TOURNAMENT IS BEING PROVIDED TO TOURNAMENT ORGANIZER AND NOT TO PSYONIX LLC.”
Tournament Organizer Responsibilities:
- You are solely responsible for all tournaments that you organize, produce, or host and all costs, expenses, and liabilities incurred by you or on your behalf in connection with those tournaments.
- You are solely responsible for (i) complying with all applicable laws relating to your tournament and the participation of players in that tournaments, (ii) obtaining all governmental approvals, licenses, and permits required to organize or conduct any tournament, and (iii) ensuring compliance with any applicable player age and work eligibility requirements in the jurisdiction where the tournament is taking place.
- You are solely responsible for determining if applicable law in your jurisdiction permits you to pay or award cash and/or non-cash prizes to players or teams.
- You must establish a set of written tournament rules and distribute them to all participants prior to the start of your tournament.
- It is your responsibility to ensure any prize pool promised for a tournament is paid to the players in a timely manner and that the tournament delivers on all rules, guidelines and structure as promised in your tournament rules and format.
- You must ensure competitive integrity in all tournaments you run, and must keep all aspects of your tournament fun, fair, and free from toxic behavior. Psyonix, at its sole discretion, may monitor your tournament and enforce any applicable sanction specified in the Community License Terms.
- Your tournament must at all times comply with, and is subject to, the Community License, Psyonix’s Terms of Use, the Rocket League End User License Agreement, and Psyonix’s Privacy Policy.
